All registered accompanying persons are invited to the social event of the Symposium, as well as to the following one half day tour:
Saturday, September 27, 2008 TOUR IN THE CITY OF THESSALONIKI Departure at 09.00am from the Makedonia Palace hotel Return at 14.00pm (approximately) The tour will offer the visitors the chance to experience its unique history. The tour will offer the visitors the chance to experience its unique history. We will visit the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, which after a period of renovation work is opening its doors to the public. The Archaeological Museum is the biggest museum of Macedonia and through its exhibitions presents various aspects of culture which developed in Macedonia, primarily in the Thessaloniki area and neighboring prefectures over a long chronological period: from the dawn of prehistory until late antiquity, till the first Christian Centuries. The museum presentations are entirely human-centered, re-creating the life and times of the people who lived in this part of Greece. How did they dress? What did they eat? How did they travel? What gods did they worship? How did they memorialize their dead? How they were socially and politically organized? With whom were they in contact exchanging objects and ideas?

Through these, the visitor will come in contact with the world of Ancient Macedonia with its civilization and its people. Afterwards we will stop at the White Tower one of the greatest monuments of the city.

Outstanding tombs of the Roman period, such as the monument of Galerius, the arch of triumph and the Rotonta are our next visit. A short break will follow at a traditional cafe and then a drop by to the Byzantine church "Saint Demetrios", the patron saint of our city. The completion of tour will be at the arch forum and at the church "Agia Sofia".
